Indiana Renters Rights Coalition

Building power with renters across Indianapolis and the state of Indiana
through community organizing, tenant councils, and policy advocacy.

This initiative brings renters together to address real challenges, strengthen collective voice, and create lasting change in housing systems.

What is the Indiana Renters Rights Coalition?

The Indiana Renters Rights Coalition is a grassroots initiative designed to support renters navigating challenges within their housing—whether in apartment complexes, rental homes, or shared properties.

We are building a structure where renters are not isolated in their experiences, but connected, informed, and empowered to take action together.

This work begins locally in Indianapolis and is designed to expand across communities throughout Indiana.

How We Organize

Tenant Councils

We support the creation of tenant councils at the property level, where renters can:

  • Meet regularly

  • Identify shared concerns

  • Work collectively to improve conditions within their community

Coalition Network

Across properties and communities, renters come together to:

  • Share experiences

  • Align on common challenges

  • Build collective strategy

Advocacy & Policy Change

Through petitions, canvassing, and partnerships, we work toward:

  • Local housing improvements

  • Stronger tenant protections

  • State-level policy change across Indiana

Why This Work Matters

Many renters experience ongoing challenges that impact their daily lives and stability, including:

  • Delayed or unresolved maintenance and repairs

  • Lack of clear communication from property management

  • Unsafe or inconsistent living conditions

  • Limited access to resources or support

At the same time, current systems often provide limited pathways for renters to resolve these issues or advocate for meaningful change.

The Indiana Renters Rights Coalition exists to shift that reality—by building both community-level support and system-level advocacy.

Who Can Be Part of This

This coalition is open to:

  • Apartment renters

  • House renters

  • Individuals renting through private landlords

  • Anyone navigating challenges in rental housing

Whether you are currently facing an issue or want to support stronger protections for renters, you are welcome here.
